There is Always Room for Everyone Under the Big Umbrella

Update – March 3, 2026

Check out the story on the front page of the District’s website – https://burnabyschools.ca/pink-shirt-day-leading-with-kindness/

Our school was included in the story.

At Clinton “There is Always Room for Everyone Under the Big Umbrella”.  A connecting activity at Clinton for our Sprinkle Kindness theme was modelled upon the book The Big Umbrella by Amy June Bates where we started with a read loud of the book and each class discussed ideas such as:

  • What does this story say about fairness, kindness, or inclusion?
  • Why do you think the umbrella kept making room for everyone?
  • What does the umbrella symbolize? Who or what might it represent in real life?
  • Who’s under the umbrella?
  • What challenges come with inclusion, and why is it still important to include?
  • What responsibilities do we have to make sure no one is left out?

Students and staff created full body self-portraits as a realistic representation of themselves including self-identity through clothing, facial expression, skin colour, style, hair and any other version of creativity and we are now all gathered together as a community under the Big Umbrella.
